Dental Bridge

A dental bridge works similarly by bridging the gap created by one or more missing teeth. It typically consists of:

• Abutments: These are the natural teeth located on either side of the gap, serving as support bases for the bridge. These teeth are slightly prepared (filed down) to receive crowns.
• Pontic: This is the artificial tooth or teeth that replace the missing ones. It is connected to the crowns on the abutment teeth.

The bridge is a fixed prosthesis, meaning it is permanently cemented onto the supporting teeth by the dentist and cannot be removed by the patient.

When is a bridge necessary?

A dental bridge may be necessary for:

• Replacing missing teeth: It improves the appearance of the smile and restores chewing and speaking function.
• Prevention of adjacent teeth shifting: When a tooth is missing, neighboring teeth may tilt or shift into the gap, causing bite problems and increasing the risk of decay and gum disease.
• Restoration of proper distribution of chewing forces: Missing teeth can lead to overloading of the remaining teeth.
• Support of facial shape: Loss of multiple teeth can cause facial muscle sagging and changes in appearance.

Materials Used for Bridge Construction:

Dental bridges can be made from various materials, such as:

• Metal-ceramic: They have a metal framework for strength and are covered with porcelain for aesthetic results. They are durable and suitable for back teeth that endure heavy chewing forces.
• All-ceramic (porcelain or zirconia): They are made entirely from ceramic materials. They offer excellent aesthetics by closely mimicking the color and translucency of natural teeth. Zirconia is especially durable.
• Resin: They are mainly used for temporary restorations.
