Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are one of the most popular and effective cosmetic dental treatments for radical improvement in the appearance of the front teeth. They are thin, customized shells of porcelain that are bonded to the front surface of the teeth, offering a natural, radiant, and long-lasting result.

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are custom-made restorations created in a dental laboratory. They are made from high-quality porcelain, a material with excellent aesthetics, durability, and biocompatibility. Porcelain has the ability to perfectly mimic the translucency and light reflection of natural teeth, providing an exceptionally natural result.

Why Choose Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are an ideal choice for addressing a variety of aesthetic issues, such as:

Porcelain Veneer Placement Procedure:

The procedure for placing porcelain veneers usually involves the following steps:

  1. Consultation and Planning: The dentist discusses the patient's desires and examines the condition of their teeth. Photographs and possibly digital impressions are taken to design the new smile.
  2. Tooth Preparation: To accommodate the veneers, the dentist removes a small amount (usually 0.3-0.5 millimeters) from the front surface of the teeth.
  3. Taking an impression: An accurate impression of the prepared teeth is taken and sent to the dental laboratory.
  4. Veneer Fabrication: In the laboratory, technicians fabricate the custom porcelain veneers, matched to the patient's tooth color, shape, and size.
  5. Placement of Temporary Veneers (Optional): In some cases, temporary veneers may be placed to protect the prepared teeth and give the patient an initial preview of the final result.
  6. Permanent Veneer Placement: Once the permanent veneers are ready, the dentist tries them in to ensure a perfect fit and aesthetic. Then, the veneers are bonded to the teeth with a special dental adhesive.
  7. Final Finishing: The necessary adjustments are made, and the bite is checked.

Advantages of Porcelain Veneers:

  • Excellent aesthetics: They offer the most natural and radiant result, perfectly mimicking the appearance of natural teeth.
  • Long-term durability: With proper care, they can last for many years (10-15 years or even longer).
  • Stain Resistance: Porcelain is resistant to stains from coffee, tea, tobacco, and other coloring agents.
  • Biocompatibility: They are friendly to the oral tissues.
  • Color Stability: They maintain their color over time.

Caring for Porcelain Veneers:

Proper care is important for maintaining the appearance and lifespan of porcelain veneers:

  • Good Oral Hygiene: Regular brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash.
  • Avoid hard foods: Refrain from biting hard objects or foods that may cause damage.
  • Avoiding Bad Habits: Avoid biting nails or other objects.
  • Regular dental visits: For professional cleaning and check-ups.

What you should know

No procedure in our office is painful, as the necessary anesthesia is always administered so you won't feel a thing. Furthermore, the procedure isn't particularly painful because the removal of tooth structure is very conservative.

How long they'll last is a question that can and cannot be answered! It depends on the care we give them. For example, we need to be very careful about impacts. If the patient is an athlete, they should wear a special athletic mouthguard during training to protect the veneers from fracturing. In general, porcelain is a durable material, but because veneers are usually quite thin, we need to be careful about impacts. In short, if you follow the maintenance instructions, you'll have them for many years!

They are made of porcelain, which is a ceramic material much more durable than composite resin. The color of porcelain veneers doesn't change over the years or due to dietary habits, and generally, porcelain veneers show greater resistance to fracture compared to resin veneers.

Porcelain veneers are a treatment of choice in several cases, such as: for diastema (gaps between teeth) to "close" the spaces, for teeth with many fillings that are either discolored or need replacement, for discolored teeth, in cases where a change in the shape of the existing tooth is necessary (e.g., fractured incisal third, microdontia), in cases where a perfectly aesthetic and natural result is the patient's primary requirement, and in cases where the patient desires a permanent and unalterable dazzling white smile! Unfortunately, porcelain veneers are contraindicated for patients with bruxism (teeth grinding), those with periodontal problems (gingivitis or periodontitis), those with habits like biting pens, and finally, when the teeth are severely damaged.

Usually, when we talk about porcelain veneers and a smile, we're referring to the front teeth of the upper jaw, because these are the teeth primarily visible when we speak or smile. We typically work on the front six teeth, but this always depends on many factors (e.g., the extent of your smile).
